Ever wanted to know more about the company - or person - behind an IP address or domain name? If you have, Whois is the program for you, a small application that presents the information behind web addresses in a clear and easy-to-read manner.
There isn't much to Whois - it consists of a single interface, a search box and a Query button. The results are displayed in the space below, but you have to be careful not to press return after entering a search term as Whois closes when you do! Whois manages to find information for most domain names and IP addresses, but if it can't, it will tell you in the results space.
Whois is not the most flexible program and there are websites that perform the same function. The application is easy to use, however, and the information it presents is easy to cut and paste into other documents. It also tells you exactly where it is getting the data from, which makes it more reliable. Whois probably isn't going to change your life, but if you need to look up registration information on a regular basis, it’s a useful little tool to have to hand.
